Get your kids reading this summer with Multnomah County Libraries in the Portland area! Summer Reading through the county is a FREE program that entices children raging from birth to age 18 to read when school is not in session and keeping them busy over the somewhat long days of no school. Research shows that the reading skills a student gains during the school year are lost if he or she does not read during the summer.
Parents and children track reading progress through the summer using a game/game board that challenges any level reader! Summer Reading works by encouraging children to set goals, choose books, and reach reading milestones with the help of their parents or with library staff or volunteers. At the end of the summer kids are able to bring in their game boards with their tracked progress and receive prizes based on the level they reached. The goal is the more books read the higher the level reached. The grand prize drawn randomly at the end of the summer is a round trip vacation for 4 to Disneyland! This gives all children something excited to read about and work towards. I’m sure the odds of winning the trip is pretty slim, but you never know and ALL children are rewarded for their efforts.
